A student of Hindemith, Harald Genzmer (b. 1909) is a prolific composer of music in all standard musical genres, whose style is very much in the practical vein of his great teacher. Like Hindemith, he has tried to create useful music for all varieties of instrumental combinations. This flute sonata (written in 1939) has the same liveliness and lyricism, coupled with occasional harmonic dissonance that is characteristic of the Hindemith wind sonatas. It is an excellent addition to the flute repertoire.
