Commissioned by the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association for the SEIBA Honors Jazz Ensemble, 'Bird Clues' is a 24-bar 'bird blues' bop vehicle that moves back and forth from F to Db (12 bars each). Solo trumpet is featured on the melody, the blowing section, and playing lead over a sax soli. Optional soloists may include piano, and/ or guitar. Other features include: 1). a unison passage for the brass section and brass;and 2). the drummer soloing while integrating band figures. Instrumentation: 5 saxes, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, and 4 rhythm (p-g-b-d); no woodwind doubles. Lead trumpet extends to a written Eb above the staff. Medium difficult.
