This beautiful and compeling concert offering is one of the true high points from Chuck's 'Madcap' CD w/the Jazz Surge on Sea Breeze Jazz. From it's initial chorale-like setting, the wistful, folksy main theme gives way to a hypnotic afro/cajun 12/8 groove; a solid, medium swing feel; and a sinister half-time funk segment before returning in triumphant and majestic fashion at the end. Extended solos are given to the tenor and guitar (trpt on the CD). But trombone (with plunger) and guitar (this time on solid body) have an opportunity to steal the spotlight with their short, over-the-top solos toward the end. While a challenge for even the mature band to play; the listener is not similarly stretched - engaged throughout by the unique colors, captivating grooves, and tuneful melodies.
