Originally written for a small orchestra, Brahms excluded violins from the original score intentionally, not wanting to include their outstanding brilliance of tone. Brahms instead suggests additional violas, violoncelli, and basses. In this arrangement for woodwinds, the string parts are carefully scored in the Clarinets III and IV, Alto, Bass, and Contra Bass Clarinets to achieve the same effect.
