Inspired by the tragic loss of the astronauts abroad the space shuttle Columbia, Encomium for the Courageous is a mature work celebrating their heroism and valor. Beginning with a memorial based on 'taps,' the music leads into a heroic fanfare, then into the 'courageous theme' portraying resilience and persistence. The fourth 'hymn' section is intended as a prayer for the lost, and is followed by a brilliant reprise of the 'courage' theme. Expect the audience to explode with applause.
