Castle Suite in three movements by Jerker Johansson was completed in 1999 and originates back to a wedding which the composer attended at Kalmar Castle. This renaissance stronghold is one of Sweden’s most important historical buildings. The castle was an important fortress during the 13th century as well as the place for the signing of a union between Sweden, Norway and Denmark a century later. During the regime of king Gustav Vasa of Sweden 1523 the union ceased. The design of the castle as it looks today dates back to the 16th century which makes it one of the few buildings in Sweden fully preserved to our time. The composer dedicated a bridal march for his friends on their special day. At his visit at the castle he was inspired by the history and impressive surroundings. This resulted in two more movements that together with the bridal march are presented in the suite.
