The well-known adventure-movie specialist, John Sturges, made an excellent war film in 1963 about the failure of a mass-escape attempt from a German prisoner-of-war camp. The film has a star-studded cast (Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, etc.). In spite of its length (2h 49min) the film remains full of suspense the whole time. The music by Elmer Bernstein plays an essential role and the brilliant march from 'The Great Escape' provides a fitting background to the action.
