Zululand, written to honor the Zulu people of South Africa, employs an original melody and orchestration based loosely on the Zulu call-and-response song, 'Shaka Mamba', also making use of a partial setting of 'Nkosi Sikelel IAfrika' in the middle section. The percussion plays a prominent role in the piece, giving it a sound authentic to the music of the Zulu people.
