Merulo's setting of Dum illucescente, a text for the Feast of St Mark the Evangelist, is scored with high clefs. The motet is framed by two polyphonic sections that incorporate some melismatic vocal lines, while the homophonic middle section in triple time is perhaps reminiscent of Merulo's madrigal style.
