This piece attempts to evoke a magical dialogue between the double bass and percussion performers. The 1st movement uses a pedal point in the bass to focus the pitch content while the tam-tam and suspended cymbal hold together the non-pitched sound. The 2nd movement is a light-hearted scherzo with some percussive effects assigned to the double basses. The 3rd movement features a more lyric line in the double bass with light counterpoint in the percussion. The 4th movement combines 7/8 meter with a dorian melody, bringing the piece to a frenzied close.
