Diese Kammerkantate für zwei Soprane, Cembalo und Streichtrio wurde vom Shakespeare Institute mit Hilfe von Mitteln in Auftrag gegeben, die von West Midlands Arts 1984 bereitgestellt wurden. The Phoenix and the Turtle basiert auf Shakespeares Gedicht und ist eine metaphysische Allegorie der Liebe und ihrer Vollendung im Tod - eine Art ornithologischer Liebestod. Bei diesem Stück handelt es sich um die vollständige Partitur.
