Commissioned by the Machynlleth Festival with funds from the ArtsCouncil of Wales and the Machynlleth Tabernacle Trust. This piano trio is a mosaic of chorales, frenetic string duets, slow melodies, and lullabies. The title is a quotation from Paul Verlaine: -Qu’il etait bleu, le ciel, et grand l’espoir! -L’espoir a fui, vaincu, cers le ciel noir. Tels ils marchaient dans les avoines folles, Et la nuit seule entendit leurs paroles.
