A set of two songs on poems from the Song Dynasty of China; As In a Dream was written in 1988 for soprano voice with violin and cello (1988). Chen revised the work in 1994 for soprano; pipa; and zheng; and then again for soprano and zheng only; an adaptation premiered by Feinan Wang (soprano) and Yu-chen Wang (zheng) for a concert in 2010.
