Beschreibung:
Commissioned by pianist Hugues Leclère, Répéter…Opposer (2018) is a tribute to Claude Debussy. It makes particular reference to his Etude 9 for repeated notes (Pour les notes répétées) and Etude 10 for opposing sonorities (Pour les sonorités opposées).
The piece is based on repeated notes and chords that stand in opposition as regard register (high/low), playing techniques (resonant/detached, either successively or overlapping) and types of activity (pointillistic effects, polyrhythmic combinations, use of foreign objects). Accelerations or decelerations link the various elements, sometimes causing repeated notes or chords to morph into striated harmonic textures. The listener will also notice the reversal of some sound patterns: as their elements appear in reverse order, the initial impetus of a chord gradually becomes its final termination.
An autobiographical element underlies the piece that is full of fear and hope at the same time. And for all its brightness, it is also a reflection of a struggle for life.
