Göran Bror Benny Andersson (*16. Dezember 1946 in Stockholm), kurz Benny Andersson, ist ein schwedischer Vollblutmusiker. Seine Karriere startete bereits im zarten Alter von 6 Jahren, als er mit seinem ersten eigenen Akkordeon gemeinsam mit Vater und Großvater unter dem Gruppennamen Bennys Trio schwedische Folklore auf die Bühne brachte. Anderssons musikalischer Werdegang führte ihn über das Klavierspiel (autodidaktisch) und als jugendlicher Songwriter zur Mitgliedschaft als Organist in der Rockgruppe Hep Stars, durch die er während eines Konzerts den Musiker Björn Ulvaeus kennenlernte und mit diesem 1969 schließlich die international erfolgreiche Popgruppe ABBA gründete.
Doch Anderssons Schaffen beschränkte sich nicht nur auf ABBA; zusammen mit Ulvaeus komponierte und produzierte Benny Andersson auch für zahlreiche andere Musiker und Bands und brachte zusammen mit dem Texter Tim Rice 1984 das Musical Chess heraus, welches geschickt eine Liebesgeschichte im Rahmen der Schachweltmeisterschaft unter den Vorzeichen des Kalten Krieges inszeniert.
Ein weiteres Musical aus der Produktion von Andersson und Ulvaeus sorgte für ein wahres „ABBA-Revival“: Durch das 1999 uraufgeführte Musical Mamma Mia! erfuhren 12 Jahre nach der offiziellen Trennung der Gruppe Evergreens wie Dancing Queen, Take A Chance On Me oder The Winner Takes It All eine Art Renaissance. Die Story des Musicals hat nichts mit der Biografie ABBAs zu tun, die 22 verwendeten Lieder knüpfen aber geschickt einen roten Faden durch die Liebesgeschichte aus der Feder der britischen Autorin Catherine Johnson.
Zwischen 1987 und 2017 brachte Andersson vier Solostudienalben heraus, zudem schrieb und produzierte er orchestrale Musik für sein Benny Anderssons Orkester BAO.
