A melodic, compound meter timpani solo in a single movement. There is an emphasis on dynamics and syncopation in the performance of this work. Requires three drums.

The Sonata No. 1 for timpani and piano contains three movements which explore in-depth the melodic and rhythmic possibilities of the timpani. Used four drums.
