Die fünf Sätze des Duos zeugen von der Vorliebe des Komponisten für den reinen kontrapunktischen Satz, ohne, wie im Andante ausgeformt, dem melodischen Gesang zu entsagen.

Ein Streichtrio, welches starke romantische Züge trägt, dabei dem vom Autor stets gewünschten linearen Satz Tribut zollt. Die melodisch schlicht gehaltene Pastourelle kontrastiert bewußt.

Die Formen der linearen Inventiones werden in der Doppelfuge, dessen Kopfthema den Namen des Autors 'A-es-c-h-b-a-c-h-e-(t)r.' einfängt, über kadenzierende Zwischentöne bis ins Monumentale gesteigert.
