Johann Sebastian Bach (*31. März 1685 in Eisenach, † 28. Juli 1750 in Leipzig) gehört fraglos zu den bekanntesten, bedeutendsten und für folgende Generationen einflussreichsten Komponisten des 18. Jahrhunderts. Bach versah mit seinen autodidaktisch erworbenen und angeeigneten Kunstfertigkeiten dem Stil des Barocks seinen ureigenen, unverwechselbaren Stempel; die harmonischen Möglichkeiten des kompletten Quintenzirkels auskostend, polyphonische Stimmführungen gleichberechtigt ausarbeitend, mathematisch korrekte und gleichzeitig musikalisch lebendige Fugen entwerfend – das gesamte Œuvre Bachs spiegelt ein unfehlbares Wissen um Tonsatz wider, welches seinesgleichen sucht.
Dabei kam Bach sicherlich seine fundierte Ausbildung zum Pianisten, Organisten und Violinisten zugute, die es ihm ermöglichte, spielerische Virtuosität mit genialer Eingebung und stilsicherem Handwerk zu kombinieren. Umso erstaunlicher, dass Bachs Werke zu seiner Lebzeit an Bekannheit nicht über seine geografischen Wirkungsstätten hinaus Bekanntheit erlangten. Erst rund 80 Jahre nach Bachs Tod erfuhr seine Musik eine Renaissance, ausgelöst durch die Bearbeitung und Aufführung der Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244, durch Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in verkürzter Fassung. Mendelssohn ist es also zu verdanken, dass diese zweiteilige Passion heute zu den meistgespielten Werken der Karwoche gehört.
Innovativ war Bachs Unterfangen, eine Sammlung von Präludien und Fugen zu komponieren und herauszugeben, welche ‚durch alle Töne und Semitonia‘, also durch sämtliche Tonarten des Quintenzirkels führen: Dem
Wohltemperierten Klavier, BWV 846-893. Hierbei zeigte Bach zum einen, dass es mit Hilfe der veränderten mitteltönigen Stimmung III Andreas Werckmeisters nun möglich war, in sämtlichen Tonarten auf einem Tastenimstrument zu musizieren, ohne dass die Wolfsquinte dem Zuhörenden den Musikgenuss verleidete, zum anderen ging es Bach darum, auf diese Weise die eigenen Charakteristika der Tonarten aufzuzeigen, die durch die nach wie vor ungleichmäßigen Intervalle der Halbtonschritte mal harmonisch rein, mal fast ins Unangenehme ‚verstimmt‘ wirken und somit in der Tat unterschiedliche Gefühlswelten erzeugen können.
Durch die heute übliche gleichstufig temperierte Stimmung von Konzertflügeln kann diese Wirkung nur bedingt bis gar nicht wiedergegeben werden, Bachs Intention geht hier leider etwas verloren. Dennoch gehört das Wohltemperierte Klavier sicherlich genauso wie Die Kunst der Fuge, BWV 1080 und die
Die durch seine Dienstverträge in Weimar und später in Leipzig verpflichtend entstandenen Kirchenkantaten sind in den heutigen Sprachschatz als Bachkantaten eingegangen. Die rund 200 überlieferten mehrsätzigen Werke für (in der Regel) Chor, Orchester mit B.C. und Vokalsolisten (oft in Zusammenklang mit einem Soloinstrument) zu einem bestimmten kirchlichen Thema, sorgen noch heute dafür, dass Klassik-Radiosender rund ums Jahr jeden Sonntag eine andere, dem Kirchenkalender entsprechende Kantate senden können. Zuweilen fällt die Besetzung kleiner aus; so gibt es auch Bachkantaten, die mit einem Solovokalisten, einem Instrument und Basso Continuo auskommen – über die Hintergründe dieser Entstehungen kann spekuliert werden.
