Voller Chorklang in guter britischer Tradition! Noten von John Rutter
John Milford Rutter (* 24. September 1945 in London), kurz John Rutter, zählt zu den bekanntesten zeitgenössischen Komponisten von Chormusik.
Noch während seines Musikstudiums in Cambridge schuf Rutter seine ersten Chorwerke und nahm diese mit dem Clare College Choir unter seinem Dirigat auf. Darunter das populäre „Shepherd's Pipe Carol“ (komponiert im Alter von 18 Jahren) und sein 1974 uraufgeführtes „Gloria“ für Gemischten Chor, Bläser, Schlagzeug und Orgel.
Sein Talent und seine musikalischen Fähigkeiten verschafften John Rutter bereits im Alter von 30 Jahren den Posten des Musikdirektors des Clare College – dem Chor des Colleges verhalf dies wiederum unter der Leitung John Rutters den Sprung auf die internationale Bühne.
Nach nur vier Jahren im Amt beschloss Rutter 1979 von seinem Posten zurückzutreten und sich voll auf seine kompositorische und künstlerische Arbeit zu fokussieren, beispielsweise als Produzent von Schallplattenaufnahmen des von ihm gegründeten Kammerchores Cambridge Singers (hervorgegangen aus ehemaligen Mitgliedern des College-Chores).
„Ein ‚zeitgenössischer‘ Komponist: Ist Rutters Chormusik hör- und singbar?“ – Und ob!
Wer bei „zeitgenössischer“ Musik lediglich an streng serielle und disharmonische Kompositionen denkt, wird diesem Adjektiv nicht gerecht. Denn gerade in der Chor- und Kirchenmusik (aber nicht nur!) hat seit den 70er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts eine Sehnsucht nach klaren Harmonien, melodiösen Strukturen und interessanten (aber nicht zu schwierigen) Rhythmen eine neue Musikrichtung zur Entwicklung gebracht, die dem sperrig gewordenen Attribut „zeitgenössisch“ komplett neues Leben einhauchte. Und so ist auch die Musik von John Rutter unter der Stilrichtung „Postmoderne“ einzuordnen, die sich u.a. gegen starre Prinzipien und Kompositionsformen richtet. „Erlaubt ist, was gefällt“, könnte man sagen. Oder (durchaus positiv gemeint): „Was schert mich die Meinung Adornos!“Eine Technik der Musik der Postmoderne ist es beispielsweise auf Stilistiken, Elemente und Strukturen anderer Epochen und Genres zurückzugreifen und sie geschickt mit den eigenen musikalischen Ideen zu einem Personalstil zu entwickeln. Das findet sich auch in den Werken John Rutters wieder, die bewusst unter dem Einfluss traditioneller englischer Chor- und Kathedralmusik entstanden, gespickt mit Elementen populärer Musikformen.
Kurz: Die Musik von John Rutter ist reich an vollen, harmonischen Klängen und klaren Melodieführungen. Die Arrangements sind so gestaltet, dass selbst in kleiner Besetzung eine satte Strahlkraft erreicht wird: In der Kammer-Fassung seines 1990 vollendeten „Magnificat“ werden neben einem kleinen gemischten Chor, einer Mezzosopran- oder Sopransolistin, Harfe und Schlagzeug nur jeweils ein Holzblasinstrument (Blechbläser werden durch eine Orgel ersetzt) und eine Streichergruppe 2/2/2/1/1 besetzt. Schauen und hören Sie sich einmal die Youtube-Aufnahme des Kamerorkest Kamerata Zuid an! Es wird Ihnen an nichts fehlen. Hier wird deutlich, dass sich John Rutter intensiv mit der Musik Johann Sebastian Bachs beschäftigt hat: Kleiner Aufwand mit großer Wirkung!
Zudem verströmt die Musik John Rutters fast durchgängig eine positive Energie. Selbst seine Messe „Mass of the Children“ (2003 in der New Yorker Carnegie Hall uraufgeführt), welche John Rutter anlässlich seines mit erst 19 Jahren bei einem Verkehrsunfall ums Leben gekommenen Sohnes komponierte, trägt einen unerschütterlichen Optimismus in sich.
„A propos ‚Kammermusik‘: Gibt es auch Instrumentalmusik von John Rutter?“
Ja, die gibt es. Bleiben wir einmal bei der Anlehnung an Bach: Mit seiner „Suite Antique“ huldigt John Rutter unmissverständlich dem großen Leipziger Meister und seinem „Brandenburgischen Konzert Nr. 5, BWV 1050“ – sowohl in der Instrumentierung, als auch im Aufbau der sechs Sätze, die sich am barocken oder klassischen Stil orientieren.Und auch für Soloinstrumente hat John Rutter komponiert, so beipielsweise für Flöte und Klavier, Oboe und Klavier, Orgel-Solostücke oder auch eigene Transkriptionen seiner Werke für Klavier solo .
