Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimski-Korsakow (*18. März 1844 in Tichwin, † 21. Juni 1908 bei Luga), kurz Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow, war ein russischer Komponist, der epochal grob der Romantik oder auch der Epoche Post-Romantische Musik zugeordnet werden kann.
Durch seine Professur für Instrumentation und Komposition am Sankt Petersburger Konservatorium hatte Rimski-Korsakow eine prägende Wirkung auf die russische (und z.T. auch mitteleuropäische) Musikszene des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts und bildete mit weiteren bedeutenden St. Petersburgern Komponisten das ›Mächtige Häuflein‹. In der Musik von u.a. Prokofjew, Glasunow (beides Schüler von Korsakow), Respighi, Ravel und Debussy finden sich Rimski-Korsakows musikalische Einflüsse spürbar wieder.
Zu seinem Werk zählen u.a. 15 Opern, die sowohl historische, als auch märchenhafte Themen beinhalten. Gerne greift Rimski-Korsakow in seiner Musik auch auf russische Volksmusikelemente zurück, wie beispielsweise im Andante seiner Sinfonie Nr. 1 es-moll op. 1, die er bereits im Alter von 17 Jahren komponierte. Zwei weitere Sinfonien, 17 Orchesterwerke unterschiedlicher Gattungen (darunter auch sein wunderbarer Hummelflug, von dem Sie zahlreiche Bearbeitungen bei uns im Webshop finden), sechs kammermusikalische Kompositionen sowie eine Publikation der Harmonielehre runden sein Schaffen ab.
