Gänsehautmomente und Entspannung - mit Noten von Vangelis
Vangelis, ein Name, wie eine Verheißung. Hinter dem klangvollen Kurznamen steckt der große Klänge spendende, griechische Komponist und Musiker Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, 1943 in Agria geboren und im Mai 2022 in Paris verstorben.
Frankreich – dies war in den 60er Jahren die Wahlheimat des Autodidakten Vangelis. Hier tauchte der Junge Wilde völlig in die unterschiedlichsten Musikstile und musikalischen Innovationen der späten 60er und der 70er Jahre ein, nachdem er mit der in Griechenland recht erfolgreichen Pop-Band »Forminx« wertvolle Erfahrungen sammeln konnte.
Bei »Vangelis« denke ich automatisch an Filmmusik. Liege ich da richtig?
Und ob! Wie es dazu kam? Das Multitalent Vangelis begann als Pop- und Rockmusiker: Als Mitbegründer von »Aphrodite’s Child« schrieb Vangelis zwischen 1968 und 1972 eindringliche Progressive-Rock-Titel und spielte die Hammond-Orgel. Als »Jon & Vangelis« brachte Vangelis zusammen mit dem »Yes«-Sänger Jon Anderson zwischen 1980 und 1991 vier Pop-Alben heraus. Neben Andersons charakteristischer hoher Stimme kam vor allem Vangelis‘ Leidenschaft für Synthesizerklänge zur Geltung. Als Pionier der elektronischen Musik in den 60ern und 70ern (Vangelis besaß und verwendete um die 40 verschiedenen Synthesizer) wurden breite und volle synthetische Arrangements zu Vangelis‘ Markenzeichen.Mit diesem Stilmittel begann Vangelis in seinem Studio in London Musik zu produzieren. Die US-amerikanische Filmproduzentin Ann Druyan und Co-Produzent BBC wurden auf Vangelis‘ Album »Heaven and Hell« von 1975 aufmerksam und verwendeten die Musik als Titelthema der international erfolgreichen Dokuserie »Cosmos«.
Kinofilmproduzenten erkannten Vangelis‘ Potenzial und die Gänsehaut erzeugende Wirkung seiner elektronischen Klänge und buchten ihn in den folgenden Jahren für die Herstellung der Filmscores von den Blockbustern »Chariots of Fire« (»Die Stunde des Siegers«) 1981, »Blade Runner« 1982 und »1492: Conquest of Paradise« (»1492 – Die Eroberung des Paradieses«) 1992.
»Chariots of Fire« brachte Vangelis 1982 den Oscar in der Kategorie »Beste Filmmusik« ein, begleitete die Olympischen Sommerspiel 2012 in London und nahm somit auch die Sportevent-Welt für sich ein.
Kein Wunder also, dass die Musik »Conquest of Paradise« zur Einmarschmusik für die Wettkämpfe der Boxerlegende Henry Maske ausgewählt und dadurch noch berühmter wurde.
