Shawnee Press wurde 1939 vom berühmten Bandleader und Chorleiter Fred Waring gegründet, zunächst unter dem Namen "Words and Music". Angesichts der wachsenden Nachfrage nach seinen einzigartigen Arrangements verlegte Waring den Verlagssitz später in die Nähe seines Wohnortes in Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pennsylvania, und benannte ihn in Shawnee Press um.
