"I've just met a girl named Maria" - Noten zu "West Side Story"
Quizfrage: Was haben Vincenzo Bellini, Charles Gounod, Hector Berlioz, Peter Tschaikowski und Sergei Prokofjew gemeinsam? – Klar, alle sind sie Komponisten. Doch nicht nur das: Alle haben sich des unsterblichen Stoffs William Shakespeares „Romeo & Julia“ angenommen; als Oper, als dramatische Sinfonie, Fantasieouvertüre oder Ballettmusik. „Warum nicht auch als zeitgenössisches Musical?“ hat sich Choreograph und Produzent Jerome Robbins gefragt und beauftragte im Jahre 1949 den New Yorker Dirigenten und Komponisten Leonard Bernstein mit der Vertonung des von Drehbuchautor Arthur Laurents verfassten Scripts. Die Idee für eines der erfolgreichsten Musicals aller Zeiten ward geboren:
Die „West Side Story“
Die Geschichte Romeos und Julias kennt man oder ist schnell erzählt: Junge liebt Mädchen. Mädchen darf Junge nicht lieben, weil falsche Clique. Mädchen und Junge lieben sich trotzdem. Cliquen bekommen Streit. Menschen sterben. Junge und Mädchen begehen nacheinander Selbstmord, der Junge aufgrund eines Irrtums, das Mädchen aus Gram. Vorhang.
So einfach die Story, umso tragischer und zeitloser ihr Inhalt. Dieser genialistische Schachzug Shakespears macht es möglich, die Geschichte der verfeindeten Gruppen in das New York der 1950er-Jahre zu verlegen: Hier kämpfen zwei ethnische Jugendgangs (die US-amerikanischen Jets und die puerto-ricanischen Sharks) um die Vormachtstellung ihres Viertels. Romeo wird zum US-Amerikaner Tony, Julia zur Puerto-Ricanerin Maria.
Musikalisch setzt Leonard Bernstein dies mit zwei unterschiedlichen Stilrichtungen um: Die Jets werden mit Musiken des sogenannten Progressive Jazz untermalt: Synkopisch, treibend und teilweise dissonant mit der typischen Instrumentierung einer Jazzband. Die Sharks hingegen bekommen Motive aus der lateinamerikanischen Musik: Tänzerisch, perkussiv und für großes Unterhaltungsorchester instrumentiert. In den Szenen mit Maria und Tony gemeinsam, verschmelzen beide Stilrichtungen und geben diesen Momenten eine besondere Leitmotivik.
Wir möchten die „West Side Story“ gerne aufführen. Gibt es dafür das Aufführungsmaterial?
Im Prinzip: Ja! Allerdings ist das originale Aufführungsmaterial des Music Theatre International-Verlags nur als Leihmaterial über die Wiesbadener Musik und Bühne Verlagsgesellschaft zu beziehen.
Bei uns erhalten Sie jedoch Bearbeitungen und Auszüge aus der „West Side Story“ für sinfonisches Orchester. Auch die gebundene Original-Partitur ist bei uns käuflich zu erwerben;
Dieses Musical hat so viele wunderschöne Themen! Gibt es dafür Play Alongs?
Sie möchten gerne zu Hause den Melodien Bernsteins nachspüren, aber auf eine volle Begleitung nicht verzichten? Sing Alongs (für Gesang mit Begleitung von CD oder MP3s) und Play Alongs der „West Side Story“ für viele verschiedene Soloinstrumente sind dabei das Mittel der Wahl. Toben Sie sich nach Herzenslust aus mit den Highlights „(I wanna be in) America“, „Tonight“, „I Feel Pretty“ oder Tonys Liebesgeständnis „Maria“ und vielen weiteren Titeln!
Aber auch Songbücher mit Titeln aus der „West Side Story“ könnten für Sie interessant sein, wenn Sie die Lieder singen und sich selbst dabei auf Klavier oder Gitarre begleiten möchten.
