The Chamber Ensemble of London gave the first performance of this work at St Martin-in-the-Fields in 2009 and later recorded it on the CD Over Hill, Over Dale (EM Records).
There are four movements: Allegro non troppo; Moderato; Alla rustica; Allegro.
The fugal subject of the third movement came to the composer when, walking through Tavistock market, he remembered hearing a folk fiddler playing there when he was a very small boy, probably the first professional musician he ever heard playing live.
A PACK includes a full score and strings 4/4/3/4/2.
