These three pieces (Cuckmere Haven, Cornish Air %26 The Hunt Gathering) were largely written in the quieter few days between Christmas and New Year 2002 and are in a particularly'English' vein. Cuckmere Haven has always been a favourite area for walking and thinking and it offers one of the most beautiful vistas on the Sussex coast. Cornish Air is a piece of nostalgia for my birthplace. The Hunt Gathering: At Christmas 2001 I was in the village of Laycock to watch what might have been the last Boxing Day Hunt. It was a splendidly vibrant and very English event in which a splattering of protesters were outnumbered by an enthusiastic crowd of supporters and onlookers, w ho cheered as the hunt set off in a blaze of finery and excitement.
