Beschreibung:
In 1992 I attended a band festival in the south of France where I met the conductor of a fanfare band from Luxembourg, Robert Köller. He was kind enough to say some encouraging words to me about one of my compositions which was performed at the festival. He also asked me if I would write a piece for his band, (the Fanfare Berbuerg), as they were planning a special concert in 1993 to mark their 100 years jubilee. At that time I had never written a piece for fanfare band before so it was an interesting challenge and I worked at the piece on and off for about 6 months. When it was nearly finished I wrote to the band asking what it should be called and giving two or three suggestions. They decided on the final title and ever since everyone is very puzzled by it. 'D`Schangflöppen' is the name of a legendary and very special character who came from the district around Berbuerg. He is the subject of a poem and although I do not know all the details his exploits have ever since made his name famous in the area. In addition to his reputation it has become tradition to generally describe people from that area as 'D`Schangflöppen' in the same way that one gives a general name to a group of people coming from the same town or county. D`Schangflöppen was first performed in the church at Berbuerg on the 11th December 1993. Mr Louis Martinus was present at the concert and he later asked me if he could make a wind band arrangement of the piece and publish it - to which I readily agreed. I must say that he did an excellent job of this and I quite prefer his arrangement more than the original. I would like to add a few words about tempo. The second theme ( from the 3 / 4 Andante Moderato) is often taken too slowly). The mm = 76 is an absolute minimum tempo here otherwise the music loses its flow. Similarly the final Moderato Maestoso should not be played at less than the given metronome. D`Schangflöppen is in a loose sonata form. After a fanfare-type opening the first energetic allegro 12/8 theme is presented and explored before giving way to a more lyrical Andante tempo for the 3 / 4 second theme in sub-dominant key. In the middle section both themes go through some development before the recapitulation in which the second theme is now converted to 4 / 4.
